We accept woprk experience and work placements from a wide range of institutions for example local schools, Prince’s Trust, Myerscough and UCLAN.
We expect the student to approach us having read our website and understanding that we are not a traditional livery yard and training facility. We welcome the student to come visit us so that we can get to know each other a little before deciding if this is an appropriate placement.
No experience of horses or stable management is required, however a resilience for working outdoors in all weather is essential. Most of our students leave with the UK Rural Skills certificate in Basic Horse Skills – Cleaning and Preparation of Stables. As the number of stables to be cleaned daily is not large, there is time for other activities dependent on the student. This might include painting, gardening or general maintenance, horse handling and grooming, lectures on equine psychology and training methods, wound care and ailments, groundwork exercises with the horse, or observation of farrier, vets and physios. The placement does not include any horse riding.
There are no shops nearby so students need to bring their own lunch and snacks. A kettle, microwave and fridge are provided, along with a heated rest room for breaks. The atmosphere is quiet, inclusive and welcoming. In particular we have very successful placements with students who have autism, ADHD etc and for whom a conventional work environment would be overwhelming.
There is no bus route to us, so students will need to organise transport.
